29. In fact, the legend, as reported in Keralopatti, adds that the Nairs were ordered to be the ‘eye’ (kan), the ‘hand’ (kei) and at the ‘command’ (kalpana) of the Nambuthiris. 30. Nowhere else in India did such a complex and refined system of ritual pollution exist. A person from the lowest caste was not only untouchable but unapproachable in Kerala. That this form of rigid caste observances continued for a long time is borne out in the writing of the wife of a nineteenth-century English missionary, who gave the following touch and distance pollution parameters in descending order of caste hierarchy: [A] Nair may approach a Brahmin but not touch a Brahmin; a Chogan Ezhava must remain thirty six paces off, and a Pulayen slave ninety six steps distant.
