Nowhere else in India did such a complex and refined system of ritual pollution exist. A person from the lowest caste was not only untouchable but unapproachable in Kerala. That this form of rigid caste observances continued for a long time is borne out in the writing of the wife of a nineteenth-century English missionary, who gave the following touch and distance pollution parameters in descending order of caste hierarchy: [A] Nair may approach a Brahmin but not touch a Brahmin; a Chogan Ezhava must remain thirty six paces off, and a Pulayen slave ninety six steps distant.
