Da begynte den lange ferd, fra et naturlig loddent mørke til et helt annet mørke, det moderne kunstbelyste mørke, for jeg hadde allerede et års tid rukket å betvile de egenskaper som jeg hadde fått tilegnet meg der ute på landsbygda, erindringen om arbeidet ute på åkrene, i skogen, i fjøset, inne i vedskjul og dypt nede i mørke potetkjellere, begynte å plage meg. Egenskaper som nøysomhet, grundighet, respekt for naturens liv og for eldre mennesker, framsto ikke bare som latterlige, men de var også egenskaper som forhindret meg i å forstå verden, forstå hvordan den nye tid var, som hindret meg i å delta i det moderne Norge, fordi jeg så at det måtte helt andre egenskaper til om en skulle delta i denne utviklingen, for de personer som førte an var de ledende i tiden, forbildene var selvopptatte, kyniske og nevrotiske, de ble i stedet sett på som en helt ny type mennesker, der selvopptatthet visstnok var selvinnsikt, kynismen ble forvekslet med avansert humor og deres fullstendig stressede og nevrotiske sinnelag ble tolket som uttrykk for dynamikk og handlekraft.
